The Lord’s Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer is an interactive participatory poem reminding us that we are all God’s children.

The children's portraits on the end sheets were inspired by photographs taken by World Vision International photographers. I used to work on their magazine and it often broke my heart to see the pain and struggle of the children of the world. At the same time, children are the hope of the world. And this poetic prayer begins with "Our Father..."

The sun motif is woven throughout this book as a metaphor for the glory of God. Why the sun? It's the biggest thing I could get a handle on. Also I was born in the desert and the sun was always up there cooking my brain. Hey, maybe that's why my favorite color is yellow.

I’m always amazed by by astronomers' discoveries, especially photographs of different wave lengths of light not normally visible. This sun painting is a take-off of that idea

My grandchildren were among the many who modeled for the paintings in this project.

When I first saw Michelangelo’s depiction of the Creation of Adam hovering way up there on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, I was at once floored and also lifted up into the cosmos. So as a nod to that experience and brilliant artist, I began my illustrations with parent-to-child connection. I combined my hand with my son’s hand holding my grandchild’s hand. God’s love passed down through the generations.

Preparing boards for silk screened designs with oil painting applied over the designs.

The technique I used for these paintings was an experiment combining serigraphy with oil painting. It’s all about the layers, each with a different design and color.

Some of the progression of this experiment is shown in these sun images.

And yet another sunburst design done for this book.

Reviews:

“ Warren, author of the mega-bestseller The Purpose Driven Life (2002), and Watson join forces for a thoughtful and visually appealing introduction to the Protestant version of the Lord’s Prayer… The illustration for “lead us not into temptation” is inspired, showing the image of a solemn-faced boy in a mirror against a dark background lit by a single candle… Watson’s light-filled, expressive paintings bring the famous prayer into focus for younger children with greater accessibility than any other currently available edition. Both highly useful and beautiful—an unusual and welcome combination.” *Star Editor Review Kirkus Review
